How to Make a List of SEO Keywords: 7 Step Process

Hey there, Shahnoorblogger here, and I’ll tell you how to make a list of SEO keywords that aligns with your websites goal, niche, and offerings.

How to Make a List of SEO Keywords: Seven Steps

1. Identify Your Website’s Goals

Every website has a different goal, niche, and offering. Therefore, your keyword strategy should align with the specific goals of your website.

  • Are you focusing on increasing brand awareness,
  • driving sales,
  • or providing information?

Once you’ve identified your goals, you can move forward with finding the right keywords.

2. Brainstorm Seed Keywords

Start by brainstorming seed keywords related to your niche. These are broad terms that represent the main topics of your website.

dive deep in Different types of keywords you can target.

For example, if you’re running a wedding anniversary site, seed keywords might include “wedding gifts,” “anniversary celebrations,” or “first-year anniversary ideas.”

3. Use Keyword Research Tools

You are not here to guess, instead, you have to validate the data by using keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to expand on your seed keywords.

These tools will provide you with variations, related terms, and additional insights such as search volume and competition. Make sure to consider long-tail keywords, which are more specific and often less competitive.

4. Analyze Competitor Keywords

Look at what keywords your competitors are ranking for. Tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush can help you analyze their top-performing keywords. This can give you insights into what’s working in your industry and help you identify gaps in your own strategy.

5. Categorize Your Keywords

After gathering a broad list of potential keywords, categorize them into groups based on the topics they cover.

For example, if you’re working on a B2B website offering cybersecurity services, your categories might include branded keywords, informational keywords, commercial keywords, and so on.

6. Prioritize Your Keywords

Not all keywords are created equal. Some may have high search volume but be extremely competitive, while others might be easier to rank for but have lower volume. Prioritize your keywords based on their relevance to your business goals, search volume, and competition.

7. Document Your Keywords

Finally, document your keyword list in an organized format, such as a Google Sheet. Make sure to include columns for the keyword, search volume, competition level, and any other relevant data. This will make it easier to reference and update as your strategy evolves.

Examples of Making a List of SEO Keywords in Action

Example 1: A Wedding Anniversary Site

One of my clients ran a wedding anniversary website, which was both informational and affiliate-driven. After analyzing the site, I realized that creating a series of keyword topics could work well. We brainstormed keywords like:

  • Gifts for first-year wedding anniversaries
  • Gifts for second-year wedding anniversaries
  • Gifts for third-year wedding anniversaries, and so on.

This strategy allowed us to create up to 60 pages of content, each targeting a specific year of marriage. From there, we drilled down even further with keywords like “first-year wedding anniversary gifts for men” and “first-year wedding anniversary gifts for women.” By organizing all these keywords into a Google Sheet, we had a roadmap for creating highly relevant content that catered to specific user needs.

Example 2: A B2B Website for Digital Services

Creating a list of keywords for a B2B website can be tricky, especially if the site offers a wide range of services. One of my clients provided digital services like cybersecurity, web development, and digital marketing. The challenge was to narrow down the broad services into more specific categories. We focused on “penetration testing” under cybersecurity, using keyword research tools to find relevant terms like:

  • What is penetration testing?
  • Penetration testing services
  • Penetration testing cost

This laser-focused approach helped us create a content strategy that was not only comprehensive but also highly targeted, driving more qualified leads to the site.

What Does a List of SEO Keywords Mean?

An SEO keyword list is a comprehensive collection of words and phrases that potential customers are likely to use when searching for your products, services, or content online. These keywords guide your content creation, ensuring it aligns with what people are actively searching for.

In short, it’s the backbone of your SEO strategy.

Why Is a Well-Organized List Important?

Having a well-organized list of SEO keywords is crucial because it allows you to

  • target the right audience,
  • create relevant content,
  • and ultimately improve your rankings on search engines.

Without a proper keyword list, you’re essentially shooting in the dark, hoping to hit your target.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Create My SEO Keyword Lists Document?

Well, it totally depends on how you like to organize things. Based on my experience, I usually create three columns: one for the list of all keywords, another for search volume, and the third for keyword difficulty.
You can also add columns for targeted country, search intent, or notes, but those are optional.

How many Keywords should I include in My List?

The number of keywords you include in your list depends on the size and scope of your website. For a small niche site, 20 to 50 well-researched keywords might be enough.
However, for larger websites, especially those covering multiple topics, your list could contain hundreds or even thousands of keywords. Focus on quality and relevance rather than just quantity.
